Later this year Malaysia’s bionic man Dato’ Lee Chong Wei is set to compete at his fourth Olympic Games; eyeing an elusive and deserved badminton gold medal.

Rewind four years ago and his participation in London 2012 was anything but certain.

Lee sustained a severe right ankle ligament injury during the Thomas Cup 10 weeks prior to the Games.

His Olympic dream seemed over.

Thanks to Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC), Lee’s ankle was treated using his own stem cells, not only reducing his recovery time, but contributing to his incredible silver medal performance.

It’s a feat of science that has put KLSMC’s stem cell therapy on the map.

Anyone who has suffered or is suffering from musculoskeletal injuries knows just how painful and debilitating their situation can be.

For a sportsperson, it can mean the end of a career and for others, it may have a serious impact on their quality of life.

Traditional treatments often involve complex surgery and are limited to treating small injury areas. Success rates are variable and full recovery is sometimes the exception rather than the rule.

KLSMC has spent the last 10 years researching and developing an innovative procedure that repairs and regenerates the articular cartilage using the patient’s own stem cells.

The treatment restores musculoskeletal injuries back to their original state and allows athletes to resume their careers much quicker than normal.

For Lee, his stem cell treatment at KLSMC was the difference between Olympic glory and failure.

After suffering recurrent knee tendinitis in 2009, the then world number one
underwent stem cell therapy.

During his treatment his autologous peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) were harvested, cryopreserved and then injected around the area of tendinitis. The knee tendinitis was cured six weeks later, allowing him to return to the court.

These same PBSC were then used to treat his ankle injury in 2012, giving him the strength and confidence to compete in London.
